TEACHER SPOTLIGHT

UCCI Conference Presenters

April 3, 2017

Every month in our UCCI newsletter, we feature one of the extraordinary educators we have worked with at the UCCI Institutes and in the UCCI Teacher Exchange. We started this feature so that we could have a way of publicly showcasing how creative, innovative, and smart California teachers are. We archive every issue of the Teacher Spotlight here, on the UCCI website, at our Teacher Spotlight page.

This month the spotlight is a live edition... come meet our fabulous UCCI Conference Presenters live in San Diego! Here's who'll be there:

Forensic Biology

Presenters:
Greg Jones, Career Technical Education teacher- Public Services Industry Sector (Public Safety pathway) at Mountain Vista High School
Barbara Brown, Science teacher at Mountain Vista High School
Charmaine George, CTE Public Safety Instructor at Madera South High School

Forensic Biology allows students to study biology and earth science by engaging in investigations of how scientific evidence is used to solve crimes. In this session, Forensic Biology teachers will share what they've learned about implementing this course and balancing the academic and CTE instruction to fully prepare students to complete course projects successfully.

Spanish 4 for Patient Care

Presenter:
Doreidy Sandoval-Rios, M.A., B.A, Spanish II, Spanish II Fluent, Spanish IV: Patient Care Teacher at Health Careers Academy

Doreidy teaches Spanish 4 for Patient Care to prove to students that their knowledge of the Spanish language can take them far in the health industry. In this session, Doreidy will share what she's learned about implementing this course and balancing the academic and CTE instruction to fully prepare students to complete course projects successfully.

Geometry + Computer Visualization/Simulation

Presenters:
Jeramie Oliveira, Math Instructor/Math Department Chair at Simi Valley High School
Dan Shuster, Math and Computer Science Teacher, Royal High School

Jeramie says of this course: “I have students far more engaged in this geometry class than any other I have taught in 17 years. They talk math, not socialize. Their average is higher than my other classes as well. Students choose to take this class. That says a lot about the fact that they want to do the work. Students enjoy the class as well. That is the best success. Students LIKE MATH!!!"

In this session, Jeramie and Dan will share what they've learned about implementing this course and balancing the academic and CTE instruction to fully prepare students to complete course projects successfully.  Attendees will be able to participate in a hands-on activity in which they will practice a project from the course.

One of the afternoon sessions at the UCCI Conference is how to design instructional materials for UCCI courses.  This session will be led by two of the recipients of our UCCI Course Resources Development Grant:

Jonathan Schwartz, Math/Woodshop/CNC Teacher at Colfax High School will debut the instructional materials he created for the UCCI Course Constructing Algebra 2  -- including a comprehensive set of YouTube video tutorials!

Russ Cramm, Chemistry Teacher, at Downey High School, Downey USD, will be presenting materials for the UCCI Course Chemistry & Environmental Engineering: Water we doing?, including pacing guides and handouts that help students and teachers conceptualize assignments.

We hope you'll join us in San DIego at the UCCI Conference and get the opportunity to hear from these awesome educators!
