PAIRINGS PICKED FOR SPRING '14
Sept. 27, 2013
It's not time to apply - yet - but you can certainly start thinking about the Spring 2014 UCCI Institutes and whether you would like to participate. We have the dates, the place and the CTE and "a-g" topics for the courses that will be created. Our story so far:
SPRING 2014 UCCI INSTITUTES
Dates: April 10-13, 2014
Place: Hyatt Regency SFO, Burlingame
Course development teams will collaborate to integrate these CTE industry sectors and academic ("a-g") subjects:
Engineering & Architecture with mathematics ("c") or laboratory science ("d")
Information & Communication Technologies with English ("b") or mathematics ("c")
Here are some examples of courses that have been developed with these pairings - just to give you an idea of the possibilities!
Engineering and Design/Math:
Engineering Geometry with Physics – Math (Grades 9, 10)
A-G Subject: Mathematics - Geometry ("c")
CTE career pathway: Engineering and Design (Engineering Design)
Engineering Geometry with Physics is designed to introduce students to the vital role geometry and physics have played in the development of the modern world. Students earn college-prep credits for geometry and lab science, while exploring the world of engineering career fields and disciplines. Engineering Geometry with Physics could be part of an Engineering Academy in a sequence of engineering courses. This course must be taken concurrently with Engineering Geometry with Physics - Physics.
Engineering and Design/Laboratory Science:
Green Up and Go! Clean Energy-neering (Grades 9-12)
A-G Subject: Laboratory Science - Physics ("d")
CTE career pathway: Engineering and Architecture (Engineering Technology)
Green Up and Go offers students the opportunity to learn the principles of physics while they work both individually and collaboratively to complete hands-on experimental projects. As they build wind generators and personal transportation devices, students explore the benefits and drawbacks of alternative and traditional energy sources. Green Up and Go could be part of an Engineering Academy as an intermediate course in a sequence of engineering courses.
Note: All lab science courses have Algebra 1 as a prerequisite
Information & Communication Technologies:
Algebra 2 for the 21st Century (Grades 9-12)
Subject: Mathematics - Algebra 2 ("c")
CTE career pathway: Programming & Systems Development
Algebra 2 for the 21st Century integrates Algebra 2 content with game, simulation, and software development concepts. Students research, analyze, and modify existing program code and develop their own, integrating major Algebra 2 concepts such as linear functions, quadratic functions, polynomial function, and rational expressions. This course could be an intermediate course in a sequence of ICT and mathematics courses at an ICT Academy.
When the application is ready to open in the next few weeks, we'll announce it here on the website, on Twitter (twitter.com/ucciinstitutes) and through our monthly newsletter (subscribe through our web form on this page or by sending an email to email@example.com with "Please add me to the UCCI mailing list" in the Subject field).
